Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) for GI Symptoms

The upper endoscopy procedure is used to find any signs of tumors, ulcers, bleeding, and infection in the upper part of your gastrointestinal (GI) tract, including the stomach, esophagus and small intestine. This procedure uses a special tube and camera which are used to carefully guide a scope throughout the body, taking photos and giving our El Paso gastroenterologist a chance to evaluate visible signs.

When Is an Upper Endoscopy Performed?

If you suffer from gastrointestinal symptoms like acid reflux, heartburn, vomiting, nausea, weight loss, abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing, or gastrointestinal bleeding, this procedure may be used as a tool to diagnose the underlying condition.

We may perform an upper endoscopy for a number of reasons, such as:

• Detecting any abnormalities in the stomach
• Detecting any abnormalities in the duodenum
• Detecting any abnormalities in the esophagus
• To remove obstructions or polyps
• To evaluate the stomach or duodenum after surgery
• To widen narrow passages to help stop internal bleeding

If you have been diagnosed with esophageal cancer or stomach cancer, we may use the upper endoscopy procedure to investigate and confirm this diagnosis before ordering treatment. Many problems do not show up on an X-Ray test, which is why further testing may be necessary using an upper endoscopy. Upper endoscopy procedures have been proven to be more accurate than X-rays in identifying ulcers and tumors in the upper GI tract.
