Bravo 48 Hour pH Test

If you experience heartburn or indigestion, you may be suffering from gastrointestinal reflux disorder (GERD), which can be diagnosed with a Bravo system, which is a 48 hour pH test. This test is completed in our office to determine the degree of acidity or alkalinity in your esophagus. There are many benefits of this type of test in comparison to other pH tests, which use a catheter-based monitoring system and limit your ability to move about. The Bravo test is completed using a capsule that is inserted temporarily into your esophagus and transmits information wirelessly to a receiver.

The most common symptoms of GERD include the following:

  • Acid reflux
  • Heartburn
  • Chest pain
  • Pain after eating a big meal
  • Bitter taste in your mouth
  • Sore throat
  • Nausea

What is the Purpose of a pH Test?

This pH test lasts up to 48 hours and measures the degree of acidity in your body by recording how often stomach acid flows into your lower esophagus. This test gives us an accurate understanding of your exposure to acid, but does not restrict your movement or activity during the 48 hour testing period. You can maintain your normal life and activities, eating normally during this test.

After the 48 hours have passed and the test has been completed, you will have a follow-up appointment in our office. You will return the receiver at that time and we can then review the recorded information and analyze the results. This detailed information allows us to make an accurate diagnosis and course of treatment.
